How To Install OneNote On Ubuntu (2017)

How To Install OneNote On Ubuntu (2017) - Webdesign Antwerpen

In this video I walk you through how to set up microsoft office (especially onenote) on you ubuntu linux device

I'm really fond of this software and couldn't find anything that even closely resembles it on linux. Keep in mind that several features don't work. Here are the ones that I'm aware of that don't work

  • Synching with onedrive
  • Copying-pasting whilst preserving formatting

Video

Instructions

1) First up run these commands in bash;

wget -q "http://deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -O- | sudo apt-key add -
sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_natty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get install gnome-disk-utility
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
sudo apt-get update

2) Download office 2010 .iso file -> https://www.dropbox.com/s/p7xkv0hw3zpalvv/office2010.zip?dl=0
3) Extract it and run windows office 10 with disk image mounter
4) Install microsoft office 2010 with wine
5) Update to the latest version of wine
6) Thumbs up the video or leave a comment on this article :)

Debugging/Known Errors

  • Not keeping format when copy-pasting --> Copy-paste first to wordpad to preserve formatting
  • When having a 'black-screen" startup or a "crash" --> Go to playonlinux, click close and then run again.
  • DW20.exe error whilst copy-pasting --> Go to playonlinux, click close and then run again.

This isn't really installing OneNote on Linux. It's installing OneNote on Wine.

Almost (but not quite) the same as saying you can install Internet Explorer on Linux if you run Windows in a VM on a linux host.

Dumb.

Why not just access onenote via web browser?

I use Deepin 15.x and they offer a OneNote Client in the Deepin Store. One of the reasons I like Deepin so much is because they offer software that is not available in other repositories. They also have 'Web Google Drive' that works, looks, and feels just like the Windows Google Drive client. I am sure it is probably an Electron app but it very well done. So far, Deepin's OneNote client seems to work fine and runs natively from the desktop.

There is also a Deepin-branded version of Crossover that makes installing Windows software a breeze. PlayOnLinux is great but Crossover is even easier to use. It runs the Windows software in a way that makes them appear to be native Linux desktop applications. At least, for the most part. I really don't use many Windows apps anymore especially, with all the awesome open-source alternatives. The only thing I miss about Windows or MacOS is absolutely nothing.

Another solution that avoids using Wine, is to use Nativefier of Web2Desk to make an Electron app of OneDrive that will run from the desktop. Web2Desk is a website that will create website apps for free and it works perfectly. Nativefier (my favorite) is a command-line app that is easy to use and also works perfectly.

Great article. I used the method described to install OneNote on my KDE Neon system and it worked without a hitch. I like to try things out like this just learn something new. While it worked fine, I don't think it is the best way to go. Google Keep is a good alternative. Since Microsoft has all this newly found love for Linux, maybe they will break down and release a OneDrive client for Linux. Until then, I will get by with Keep and Evernote. If the Deepin OneNote client continues to work well then I am set.
